The greatest moment in American soccer was when Landon Donovan scored the winner for the United States in injury time against Algeria. The Americans had looked destined not to qualify because of the other results in the group that were going on. They felt as though their time had run out and they felt very unlucky and undeserved of the fate that was befalling them. After all, they had had some terrible decisions in the Algerian game. Goals that should have been allowed were not and they were perfectly legitimate goals. That made them angry and it seemed as if this was the anger that they were going to take with them as they exited the World Cup of 2010 in the group stages.

However, good players always rise above these things. They realize that things such as referee decisions will go with you and against you on certain days. As a result, players are always willing to give it everything until the last moment to see what they can do for their team. That is what Landon Donovan did and that is what makes him the star of this team. When the USA were in trouble, Donovan was there as he has been for them and for his club this season, the LA Galaxy.

In the 92nd minute, Donovan and the rest of the team swarmed forward and the move ended with him putting the ball in the back of the net. As the commentator chanted, “Go Go USA” the Americans knew they had made the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time in a while. Donovan has continued this great form this year for the LA Galaxy, as his 12 goals are the best in the division and he is a major reason that they are on course to top their division and reach the playoffs.
